Is Capriotti's a Good Franchise for First-Time Business Owners?

|

Opening a restaurant for the first time can feel overwhelming, especially without a background in food service. Capriotti's Sandwich Shop removes that uncertainty with structured training, hands-on support, and nearly 50 years of proven performance, giving first-time business owners a clear path from inquiry to opening and beyond.

A Training System Built for First-Timers

Prior restaurant experience is helpful, but it isn't required to become a Capriotti's franchise partner. Capriotti’s training program is intentionally staged so each phase builds directly on the last, giving new owners time to get comfortable with one skill set before moving on to the next.

  • Training starts with online coursework covering the fundamentals of operations, management, and brand standards, so new owners have a working understanding of the business before stepping into a live kitchen. The interactive, multi-level training modules let owners and their teams learn at their own pace.

  • From there, training moves to hands-on experience at corporate-owned shops. Along with their General Manager, new owners attend a four-week Manager-in-Training (MIT) program at Capriotti's corporate restaurants in Las Vegas, covering leadership, team development, day-to-day operational execution, and customer engagement inside a real, working restaurant.

  • Five days before a new shop opens, Training Captains arrive on-site to begin in-person staff training. The designated Training Captains stay through the grand opening and for at least two more weeks, working shoulder to shoulder with the team to build confidence and smooth out day-to-day operations.

That step-by-step approach is designed to make even detailed processes feel manageable, so new owners are never learning something for the first time entirely on their own.

Support Doesn't Stop at Opening Day

For a first-time owner, the value of a franchise often comes down to how much support stands behind the brand name, especially once the day-to-day realities of running a business set in.

"Our systems and processes are built for people who have never done this before," said Bruce Evans, Vice President of Franchise Development. "Our team holds your hand through every step of the process, whether it's your first location or your fifth."

Once the doors are open, a dedicated Director of Franchise Operations, a seasoned business coach, checks in weekly to help owners navigate performance, profitability, and growth. In addition, digital resources and monthly webinars provide guidance on supply chain management, inventory, and customer service best practices along the way.

Marketing is another area where new owners benefit from built-in expertise. Capriotti's Rewards Program and centralized marketing campaigns are managed by the brand, so franchise partners don't need marketing experience to keep guests engaged and coming back.

A Proven Model First-Time Owners Can Trust

Since opening its first location in 1976, Capriotti's has grown into a nationally recognized brand with more than 175 locations across the country. That kind of longevity doesn't happen by standing still: the brand keeps investing in new tools and technology, all designed to make it easier for franchise partners to run efficient shops as the system continues to expand into new markets.

Many current Capriotti's franchise partners came from outside the restaurant industry, from corporate careers, hospitality, and fine dining, and credit the brand's systems and support for making the transition manageable. The consistent thread across their stories is that Capriotti's gives new owners a playbook rather than a blank page, with defined steps, dedicated coaching, and a support team invested in their success from day one.

"Most of our franchise partners are first-time business owners with little or no restaurant experience," said Evans. "They combine that background with our hands-on approach to build something successful, and many go on to open three or more restaurants in their market."
